Francis Meletzky grew up in Leipzig during the GDR era, studied German language and literature, media studies, and English after reunification, and worked as a waitress at Manchester City Football Club. She then directed plays at Theater Oberhausen and won the Theaterpreis der Stadt Oberhausen (Oberhausen Theater Prize). She went on to study directing at the HFF-Konrad-Wolf in Babelsberg. In addition to her work as a director, she taught screenwriting at the Film University Baden-Württemberg and is occasionally a member of film juries. She is the mother of two adult sons.
She tells her stories exclusively through the tragic and/or comical conflicts of her characters. She has worked with Corinna Harfouch, Albrecht Schuch, Hanna Herzsprung, Jörg Schüttauf, Nora Tschirner, Max Hubacher, Annette Frier, Bjarne Mädel, Anja Kling, Max Riemelt, Grazyna Szapolowska, Jan Josef Liefers, Malgorzata Mikolajczak, and Christoph Maria Herbst. She has directed the feature films FREI NACH PLAN, VORWÄRTS IMMER! and DER SCHIMMELREITER (theatrical release in fall 2025), among others.
Her television films include STROMBERG, various episodes of TATORT, and the two-part event film AENNE BURDA. She directed the series 3 CAMINOS for Amazon and SCHLAFENDE HUNDE for Netflix.
Francis Meletzky has received numerous awards, including the DEFA Foundation's Young Talent Award, the
VARIETY CRITICS CHOICE AWARD Karlovy Vary, Best Film at the SHANGHAI INTERNATIONAL FILM FESTIVAL, the GERMAN COMEDY AWARD, and the BAVARIAN FILM AWARD.
